Abstract

In the present work, the viability of electrical power generation from a hybrid solar-wind-biomass-battery- diesel energy system is examined as a substitute for grid-based power supply that is presently being used by the lecture hall (new gallery) at NIT Silchar. The monthly energy requirement of the lecture hall varies according to the season and environmental conditions. The average monthly energy requirement range of the lecture hall has been found to be from 1192.88 kWh to 6528.58 kWh, the least and peak energy required in December and March, respectively. Solar irradiance and wind speed data are collected from a published work and worldweatheronline.com, respectively. Due to huge generation of hostel food wastes, biomass gasifier is also considered to be a potent electrical energy supplier to the lecture hall. The battery bank is used to store surplus energy generated by the renewable energy systems and then provide surplus energy as and when necessary. The diesel generator is kept as a supplement for power generation when rest of the energy sources are not able to provide for the energy requirement of the lecture hall. The major objective of this study is to determine the optimal energy resource combination among these energy resources by using TOPSIS method. The results reveal that the combination of solar-diesel-battery is the optimal combination for energy supply to the lecture hall.
