Historical Essay on Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Usage on Students’ Academic Performance: A Case Study of Umar Suleman College of Education, Gashua of Yobe State

Abstract


This study discusses impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) usage on students’ academic performance: A case study of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua, Yobe State. Students are not meant to be confirmed simply within the context of learning in the lecture hall in today's education. They will be expected to delve into the broad horizon of knowledge made possible today by information and communication technologies (ICT). The goal of this study is to investigate the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on academic performance in Nigerian higher education. Descriptive research of a case study was used for the study. The population comprised all the college staff of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua’ Yobe State, Nigeria. The sample for the study was chosen using simple random sampling techniques from 10 departments in the college and 90 academic staff, with 20 chosen using proportional stratified sampling techniques. Research instrument designed for the impact of information and communication technology usage on students’ academic performance (ICTUSAP) was used in collecting data. Face and content validity tests were performed on the questionnaire. The instrument's reliability coefficient was 0.70. The findings revealed that the impact of ICT on pupils' academic achievement was insignificant. The findings also show that the majority of students are unaware of the potential significance of ICT in their academic lives. Furthermore, the research discovered that ICT resource centers are not always available to students for use in improving their academic performance. Some of the recommendations are: To increase student productivity, the institution should make alternate power supply arrangements and consult with the ICT resource centre. There should be enough logistic support within academic institutions to allow all students to have regular access to ICT facilities, and the college of education should take an active initiative to introduce students to ICT. It can be quite beneficial in terms of helping them improve their academic performance by emphasizing ways in which they can do so. As a result, the use of ICT in academic work would gain a lot of traction.
