Comparison of Advance Data Modulation Formats in 4×10 Gbps WDM Optical Communication System using YDFA-EDFA and Raman-EDFA Hybrid Amplifiers
Abstract
In this paper, comparison of various advance data modulation formats in 4×10 Gbps wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication system using various hybrid optical amplifiers (YDFA-EDFA and Raman-EDFA) has been carried out. The advance modulation formats under study include non-return-to-zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ), carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), Duobinary return-to-zero (DRZ) and modified Duobinary return-to-zero (MDRZ). The WDM hybrid system has been analyzed over 100 km fiber for 10 Gbps system. It has been observed that MDRZ transmitter gives superior results followed by DRZ and CSRZ. YDFA-EDFA hybrid can be preferred over Raman-EDFA for CSRZ at 2.5 Gbps and for DRZ at 10 Gbps. The degradation in signal strength in optical communication system is due to nonlinear effects of fiber. It is determined that MDRZ format seems to be best option for the transmission distance beyond 100 km. Further, it is also concluded that hybrid amplifier can be used to increase transmission distance.
