Abstract

Abstract

Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks are solution for high speed voice and internet services with ubiquitous coverage. Ericsson Mobility Report (EMR) has claimed that subscriptions of UMTS/HSPA were 2.1 billion in 2015 and predicted that these are expected to reach 3.1 billion by the end of 2021 [1–3]. They support 384 kbps maximum data rate in downlink and 128 kbps data rate in uplink over a 5 km typical range using Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) technologies [4, 5, 6]. On the other hand, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) are used to provide high data rate up to 54 Mbps over 300 m length using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technologies [7, 8]. The integrated UMTS and WLAN networks can extend coverage area of UMTS networks by integrating them with WLAN Networks. The paper includes different integration architectures between the two networks by showing their protocol architectures.

Keywords: UMTS Protocol Architecture, WLAN Protocol Architecture and Integrated Networks.
